TEAM PERFORMANCE INTENSIVE
GO DEEPER WITH YOUR TEAM… AND CREATE REAL CHANGE.
Every team develops its own way of being together. It grows through the expectations of the organisation, the direction of the coaching group, the personalities within the playing group and the experiences those people accumulate together over time. Eventually that becomes what we call culture, although the part that interests me most is how that culture is actually experienced by the individuals responsible for turning it into performance.
That is why the Team Performance Intensive begins before I bring the entire team together. I want to understand the environment I am entering, the future you are trying to create and the people who will ultimately determine whether that future becomes real. I want to hear what matters to the coaches, understand what the leaders within the playing group experience and spend time with the individuals whose performances eventually combine to become the performance of the team.
Those conversations give us permission to go deeper. You talk and I listen, not with a predetermined assessment sitting in front of me, but with more than 20 years of experience helping me recognise when something deserves another question. Sometimes a seemingly insignificant comment opens an entirely different conversation. Sometimes what one person experiences connects with something somebody else has already shared. Sometimes the most valuable discovery is recognising something the team is already doing extraordinarily well and understanding it deeply enough that we can begin creating more of it.
This is the value of taking the time to understand before trying to create change. I am not arriving to impose somebody else’s performance culture on your organisation, because the people sitting inside your environment already have an identity, history and enormous amount of capability. My role is to understand what is creating the performance you have now, connect with what you want that performance to become and begin uncovering what may allow the people within your team to move closer to it.
HOW DOES THE INTENSIVE BEGIN?
The Intensive usually begins with the people who hold the clearest picture of where the organisation is going. The Head Coach, Performance Director and key members of the coaching or leadership group give me the opportunity to understand the intention behind the team, what success looks like from inside the organisation and what they believe will be required to create it.
From there, I want to understand how that intention is being experienced throughout the team. Conversations with player leaders, members of the playing group and other key people allow me to see the same environment from different perspectives, which gradually creates a much richer understanding of the people behind the performance. This is where honesty becomes incredibly valuable, because the objective is not agreement for the sake of harmony. The objective is understanding.
The conversations themselves are part of the experience. When somebody is given the opportunity to speak openly about their performance, their environment and what they want to create within it, they often begin hearing their own thoughts differently. A question can create awareness. A different perspective can change the meaning attached to an experience. Something that had previously been accepted as simply the way things are can suddenly become something worth exploring.
So the work has already begun.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
I am looking to understand what is creating the performance that already exists and what may allow more of the team’s potential to become available. That means becoming equally interested in the things that are working beautifully and the areas where greater performance may still be waiting, because both can tell us something important about the people and environment creating the outcome.
This is where more than 20 years working with elite performers becomes particularly valuable. After working with 50 World and Olympic Champions and several thousand professional athletes, I have learned to remain curious about what sits underneath the first explanation. What appears to be confidence may have something deeper beneath it. What is described as pressure may mean something completely different to two athletes standing beside each other. A behaviour that makes perfect sense when viewed from one person’s position can take on an entirely different meaning once we understand the experience creating it.
I keep pulling on those threads because visible performance is the end result of everything that happened before it. The more accurately we understand what is creating that result, the more intelligently we can begin influencing what happens next.
WHY THE CONVERSATIONS MATTER
The people inside elite sport spend enormous amounts of time being observed, measured, coached and evaluated, which makes genuine conversation particularly valuable. When I sit with an athlete, I am not deciding whether they will be selected next week, negotiating their next contract or determining their position within the team. I can listen to their experience with a different purpose, which is to understand the person who has to access their performance when all of those other considerations become real.
The same understanding extends to the coaches and performance staff because they are operating inside the environment rather than simply controlling it from outside. They carry expectations, responsibility and pressure of their own, while trying to create the conditions in which other people can perform. Understanding their experience alongside the athletes’ experience allows a much more complete picture of the team to emerge.
As those conversations begin connecting, we can start seeing where intention and experience already align strongly and where there may be an opportunity to bring them closer together. That is not about exposing faults within a culture. It is about understanding the culture well enough to help the people inside it create more of what everyone ultimately came there to achieve.
THEN WE BRING THE TEAM TOGETHER
Every Team Performance Intensive includes the complete Team Performance Introduction, although by the time we reach that experience I am no longer walking into a room filled with strangers. I have begun understanding who these people are, what matters to them, how they experience their environment and what the organisation is ultimately trying to create through them.
That changes what becomes possible when we bring everyone together. The performance principles have been refined through more than 20 years of elite sport, yet the conversation can now connect naturally with the world these athletes actually inhabit. They can recognise themselves within what we are exploring because I have taken the time to understand something about the people behind the uniforms before asking them to explore what may be happening inside their own minds.
This is where the Introduction becomes considerably more powerful within an Intensive. We still explore how thoughts, emotions, unconscious responses and established neural pathways can influence what becomes physically available under pressure, although that understanding is now being experienced within the context of their team. The conversations that came before allow us to connect individual awareness with the collective environment, so athletes can begin recognising not only what influences their own performance, but how their internal state becomes part of what the people around them experience as well.
That is where going deeper begins creating real change.
FROM UNDERSTANDING TO CHANGE
The purpose of understanding a team is ultimately to create something with that understanding. Once athletes begin recognising what moves them towards their own Peak Performance State and what can quietly move them away from it, they have greater opportunity to influence the state they bring into performance. As that awareness develops and different responses are experienced repeatedly, new neural pathways and associations can begin becoming more familiar, allowing change to move from something understood intellectually towards something available practically.
Within a team, that process becomes particularly exciting because each individual change enters a shared performance environment. Greater composure can influence communication, clearer decision making can influence trust and an athlete who remains more connected to their own performance can change what becomes possible for the people performing around them. Over time, those individual shifts can begin contributing to something much larger because team performance has always been the combined expression of the people creating it.
This brings us back to the possibility sitting underneath the entire Team Performance pathway. You already know what it looks like when one athlete finds the zone and produces something extraordinary. The Intensive allows us to understand the individuals, relationships and environment deeply enough to begin exploring what becomes possible when more of those athletes can access more of themselves together, with greater intention and greater consistency.
HOW LONG DOES AN INTENSIVE TAKE?
A Team Performance Intensive will generally take place across approximately 1 to 2 days, although the exact structure is shaped around the organisation rather than forcing the organisation into a predetermined timetable. The number of conversations, the people involved and the depth we need to explore will naturally influence how that time is used.
The important consideration is creating enough space for genuine conversation while allowing me time to connect what I am hearing before we bring the wider team together. There is little value in filling every available hour simply to make an engagement appear substantial. The value comes from understanding what matters deeply enough that the experience which follows can be more relevant, more connected and ultimately more useful to the people receiving it.
For larger organisations or more complex environments, the Intensive can expand where greater depth genuinely serves the outcome. The structure remains flexible because the purpose is not completing a process. The purpose is creating the understanding required to begin meaningful performance change.
WHERE DOES IT HAPPEN?
The Intensive is designed to take place within your performance environment wherever possible, because being present allows me to understand things that cannot always be communicated in a briefing document or video call. I can experience how the environment feels, see how people naturally interact and begin understanding the organisation as something lived rather than something described.
The individual conversations require privacy and the wider Team Performance Introduction requires a quiet, comfortable space where people can participate openly without unnecessary interruption. Beyond those fundamentals, the environment can remain yours. This can happen at the club, within a training facility, during a camp or as part of a touring environment when that creates the right opportunity to step more deeply into the team.
Being there matters because connection changes when we share the same environment, and the quality of that connection ultimately determines how deeply people are prepared to explore what may be possible.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTERWARD?
By the end of the Intensive, your organisation has experienced considerably more than an external view of its performance. We have spent time understanding the people behind it, connected those perspectives with the future the organisation is trying to create and brought the wider team into an experience where that understanding can begin becoming change.
You have also experienced me.
That matters because a Performance Partnership should never be something an organisation chooses from a brochure. If we are eventually going to work together across a season, travel together, remain connected through changing performance environments and have me present around the moments where outcomes carry their greatest consequences, there needs to be trust in both directions. The Intensive gives us the opportunity to discover that through experience rather than promises.
If what we create together produces the connection, response and opportunity that makes continuing valuable, the Performance Partnership becomes a natural conversation. By then I understand your people and your environment, while you understand how I work and what that work begins creating within your team. We are no longer wondering whether there is a fit because we have already experienced what working together feels like.
INVESTMENT
Every Team Performance Intensive is privately scoped around the organisation and the depth of engagement required, with the complete Team Performance Introduction included as part of the experience. If your team has already completed an Introduction, that investment is recognised when progressing into the Intensive because there is no reason to charge you twice for a part of the journey we have already travelled together.
Travel and accommodation are arranged separately where required, keeping the professional investment connected directly to the work itself. The starting point is simply a conversation about your team, where you want to go and what you believe may become possible by understanding more deeply the people responsible for getting you there.
The Intensive then gives us the opportunity to discover that together, because the real value of going deeper is not how much more we can learn about your team.
It is how much more your team can become capable of creating once that understanding begins changing performance.
