Philosophy
The past explains… The future creates.
My philosophy around change has become increasingly simple over the past 20 years. I want to understand enough about your past to know how you arrived here, then I want us to turn around and look forward because that is where everything we are about to create exists.
You wouldn’t drive everywhere looking through the rear view mirror. You wouldn’t sit backwards on a horse while expecting it to carry you confidently towards where you want to go. Yet when people want to change something about themselves, so much of their attention naturally goes towards looking backwards, trying to understand what happened, why it happened and how it created the thoughts, feelings or behaviours they are experiencing today.
There can be enormous value in that understanding. The past explains a great deal about who you are now, although continuing to look towards it gives your mind more of what it already knows. I am much more interested in giving your mind somewhere new to go.
That is particularly important with athletes because I am rarely sitting opposite someone who needs more potential. The ability is usually already there. They have spent years developing their body, refining their skills and learning their sport, yet something is preventing them from consistently accessing all of that when it matters. Looking backwards may help us understand why. Looking forward allows us to begin changing it.
So when someone sits with me, my thinking is quite simple. Who are you now? Where do you want to go? Who do you want to be when you get there? Then, knowing those answers, what changes can we make now that begin moving your mind, your emotions and ultimately your performance in that direction?
That is the part of this work I love. We are not waiting for some distant version of you to appear one day. We are creating the internal changes now that allow you to begin thinking, feeling and responding more like that person today. As those changes become familiar, the future stops feeling like something you are chasing and starts becoming something you are already moving towards.
After working with 50 World and Olympic Champions and thousands of athletes over more than 20 years, I have seen enough to know that people are capable of extraordinary change when they have a future worth moving towards and the right tools to help their mind get there.
Your past matters. It brought you here and it helps me understand you.
Your future is where I want to work.
Because the past explains… the future creates.
