You’ve worked incredibly hard to get here, and I hope somewhere amongst everything you are chasing, you are also starting to enjoy what you have created.

That’s easy to lose sight of in sport… You spend so long looking towards the next result that when something you’ve dreamed about finally happens, life can move on remarkably quickly. The next competition appears, expectations change and the result that once would have meant everything gradually becomes the standard you are now expected to produce.

Meanwhile, you’re changing too.

The goals become bigger because you can see more of what is possible. The people around you may begin treating you differently. There are decisions about your sport, your future and increasingly the life being built around both. Somewhere amongst all of that is still you… the same person who wants to enjoy what they do, feel good about where life is heading and have people around them who know them well enough that they don’t always have to explain everything from the beginning.

That is the space Silver creates.

By now we have shared enough that you can sit down and simply tell me what’s happening. It may be something in your performance, although it may just as easily be something outside sport that has been sitting in your head all week. You don’t have to work out whether it belongs in the conversation first because your mind doesn’t separate your life into neat little compartments. What matters at home can travel into training. Something happening within a team can follow you home. Excitement about an opportunity can sit beside uncertainty about what achieving it might change.

When life feels clearer, performance often feels freer.

That doesn’t mean creating some perfect life where nothing ever goes wrong. It means becoming increasingly comfortable with yourself as more is asked of you. You begin understanding what deserves your energy and what doesn’t. You become better at making decisions that feel right for you rather than constantly responding to what everyone around you expects. You can recognise when something is getting heavier and talk about it while it is still small, then get back to enjoying the parts of your life and sport that are going brilliantly.

Silver gives us more time for that.

Not more time because there must be more things to fix, but more space for the relationship to keep pace with the life you are creating.

You may be travelling more. Your competition schedule may be changing. A selection or contract may be opening a completely different future. Your relationships may be evolving as your commitments increase. Money may start becoming real for the first time. You may be thinking about moving interstate or overseas, changing teams, turning professional or making decisions that the younger version of you who first dreamed about all of this never imagined having to make.

Those are exciting things.

They can also feel surprisingly big when you’re the person living them.

Having someone around who already knows you means you don’t have to carry every part of that growth by yourself. We have history behind the conversation. I know where you started and what mattered to you before the results, expectations and opportunities began changing. That gives you somewhere to come back to where the conversation is still about you, rather than the athlete everyone else needs something from.

And perhaps that is where Silver becomes most valuable.

You get to keep growing without feeling as though you have to become somebody else to handle your success.

You can become more confident without losing your humility. More successful without losing the people and things you love. More focused without making your entire life about performance. You can chase something extraordinary while still laughing, switching off, having relationships, making mistakes and being a normal human being when you need to be one.

Because ultimately, what is the point of creating an extraordinary sporting life if you aren’t able to enjoy living it?

The work we started through Competitive Edge continues underneath all of this. Your awareness becomes deeper because you have more life experience to apply it to. Your Peak Performance State develops because you are developing. The tools become more natural because you’ve had time to use them when life and sport are actually happening, and our conversations give you the opportunity to understand what those experiences are teaching you about yourself.

That’s why Silver feels different from Bronze.

It isn’t better and it isn’t the next package in a sequence. Bronze may give you exactly the relationship you want. Silver is simply closer. There is more time together and more room for the person behind the performance to become part of our work, because you can see the value in having someone who already understands you staying close as your world continues to grow.

That closeness is also why Silver is only available through application and mutual agreement. You need to feel that this is the relationship you want around you, and we both need to know that working together at this level feels right. By now we know each other well enough for that to be a genuine conversation rather than a sales decision.

Some journeys become bigger

than either of us imagined.

When we first sat down together, we talked about where you were, what you wanted and what you believed might be possible. Somewhere along the way those conversations can begin changing. The things we once talked about doing become things you’ve done. The places you wanted to go become places you’ve been. We have celebrated moments you worked your whole life for, navigated others neither of us could have predicted and probably laughed at a few things that once felt incredibly serious.

And through all of it, we’ve got to know each other.

Not simply Stuart and the athlete. You and me.

I know the person who existed before some of this became real. I know what matters to you away from the stadium, the track, the pool or the field. I know the people you love, the things that make you happy and increasingly the kind of life you want all of this success to create for you.

That kind of relationship is rare, and perhaps that is why I value it so much. When you have shared enough of the journey together, the value is no longer measured by how often we meet or what happens during a particular conversation. It sits in everything we already know about each other and how quickly that understanding allows us to recognise what matters when something changes. There is a comfort in knowing you have someone beside you who remembers where this began, understands the life that has grown around your success and can still see the person underneath everything the rest of the world is beginning to see.

For a very small number of people, I may look at what we have created together and what is still sitting ahead of us and feel that I want to make a greater commitment to that journey too. That is where Gold comes from. It isn’t something you apply for or a level you automatically reach after Silver, because a relationship this personal could never really be decided by progression through a program. The invitation comes from me when everything we have experienced together tells me that staying deeply connected to what you are becoming has value for both of us.

By then, I suspect the conversation will feel very different from the tentative one we had when you first found your way to my chair. We will know each other, we will know what we can create together and, perhaps most importantly, we’ll still be excited about what we haven’t created yet.
